The 77th Hongik University Department of Painting Graduation Exhibition 《Pli-over-Pli》 begins from the concept of the 'fold (pli)'. Here, folding is an act that changes the conditions of a surface, and those conditions affect what unfolds afterward. Fifty-three artists have each accumulated different times in their work and formed their own trajectories. This exhibition is a field where those trajectories briefly cross on the same surface and build new relationships. A single fold leaves a mark on the surface. That mark does not disappear; it becomes the condition for receiving later traces. New traces are added on top, and the boundary created at the moment of folding makes gaps and thickness. Each time a new act is added over earlier traces, the relationships and structure of the surface change. The process of making work is the same. The traces left in a work become the conditions for the next choice, transformation or unexpected intervention, and each act changes the earlier marks and opens a new direction. Material is covered or revealed; images are erased or reappear. As countless choices and revisions overlap, the work keeps changing, and completion remains not a single result but a provisional state. In 《Pli-over-Pli》, the works of 53 artists have taken shape through different materials, attitudes and sensibilities, bearing different speeds and pressures. The exhibition focuses on the moment these works briefly share the same time in one space. Rather than being bound in a single direction, the works keep their own thickness while brushing against and overlapping one another to form relationships. The exhibition shows the provisional state such folds create, and each work passes through the others while independently continuing its own trajectory.
