SHUKLA ARYA

SHUKLA ARYA (b. 2003, Bhopal, India) is a Seoul-based multidisciplinary artist currently completing her BFA in Painting at Hongik University. Her practice operates at the dynamic intersection of traditional painting, industrial fabrication, and cinematic documentation, manifesting through large-scale relief canvases and spatial installations. Drawing deep inspiration from the dense, mechanical workshop alleys of Seoul’s Euljiro and Sewoon Sangga, Arya’s work examines the friction between manual craftsmanship, heavy machinery, and the urban landscape. She approaches the canvas as a physical site of construction, embedding raw elements like wire mesh, hardware components, and heavy modeling paste directly into her surfaces to build highly tactile, organic reliefs. Her conceptual framework is heavily informed by cinematic history—specifically the documentary gaze and metric montage of early avant-garde film—allowing her to translate urban observation into a cohesive visual language. Her culminating exhibition centers on the 금 (Grain of Fracture) collection, an immersive spatial narrative constructed through three equally vital elements. The physical weight of a commanding, large-scale mixed media relief canvas stands in direct dialogue with the kinetic energy of her single-channel documentary video Urban Chronicle and the structural presence of her continuous, floor-mounted photo installation Run! Stop! Go!. Through this multidisciplinary convergence, Arya deconstructs the raw, mechanical pulse of the city, transforming fragmented industrial textures into a meticulously crafted, multi-sensory experience. SHUKLA ARYA (b. 2003, Bhopal, India)는 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 다매체 시각 예술가로, 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과에 재학 중이다. 대형 부조 회화와 공간 설치를 주 매체로 다루며, 전통적인 회화 양식과 산업적 제조 방식, 그리고 영상 기록 매체가 교차하는 역동적인 지점을 탐구한다. 작가는 을지로와 세운상가 일대의 밀집된 기계·공구 상가 골목에서 영감을 받아, 수공예적 노동과 육중한 기계, 그리고 도시 풍경 사이에 발생하는 마찰에 주목한다. 그는 캔버스의 화면을 물리적인 축조의 공간으로 인식하며, 철망, 산업용 하드웨어 부품, 무거운 모델링 페이스트와 같은 날것의 물성을 표면에 직접 개입시켜 촉각적이고 유기적인 부조를 쌓아 올린다. 이러한 물질적 실험은 초기 전위 영화의 다큐멘터리적 시선과 운율적 몽타주(metric montage) 기법 등 영화사적 문맥과 결합하여, 도시를 관찰하는 작가만의 응집력 있는 시각 언어로 치환된다. 이번 졸업 전시는 몰입형 공간 내러티브를 형성하는 《금 (Grain of Fracture)》 연작을 중심으로 전개된다. 공간을 압도하는 대형 혼합 매체 부조 회화의 물리적 감각은 단채널 다큐멘터리 영상 작업인 〈Urban Chronicle〉의 동적인 에너지, 그리고 바닥면을 가로지르는 연속적인 롤 종이 사진 설치작 〈Run!
